By now you’ve probably heard that Buffalo has become home to one of the largest St. Patrick’s day celebrations in the country, a celebration culminating in a parade that brings people from all over the region to downtown Buffalo. What you might not have heard is that Buffalo’s St. Patrick’s day festivities include much more than just one parade.
With Buffalo’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade on Sunday, your unapologetically Irish (even when you’re not Irish) celebration can last the whole weekend. Buffalo may not have Chicago’s green river, but The Queen City turns into a self-proclaimed sea of green every March 15th – 17th.
Taking you through some of Buffalo’s most iconic neighborhoods St. Patrick’s Day is a city-wide celebration. From the heart of downtown to South Buffalo and beyond, here is you 2019 guide to St. Patrick’s Day.
WHAT TO DO
Grab your friends and family, including the little ones, and start the weekend at Larkin Square with the 7th annual Live at O’Larkin. This Buffalo gathering space will kick off Buffalo’s St. Patrick’s celebration with live music, Irish dancing, craft beer, food trucks, and Irish dishes available at The Filling Station.
As the night progresses and the countdown to Sunday’s parade ticking away you have the perfect excuse to visit some of Buffalo’s favorite Irish bars. Assuming that you don’t already have a favorite yourself, we recommend Cole’s (Elmwood Village), The Blackthorn Pub & Resturant (South Buffalo.), Brennan’s Bowery Bar (Williamsville), or D’Arcy McGee’s.
With a history rooted in Irish heritage, it’s no surprise that the Old First Ward neighborhood would have its own parade. Held on March 16th, the 26th annual “Old Neighborhood” St. Patrick’s Day Parade marches through The Valley & Old First Ward neighborhoods. The parade will begin at noon and start at the Valley Community Center.
Immediately following the parade will be a traditional grand Irish “Hooley” with live music and plenty of food and drinks. Both the “Old Neighborhood” Parade and “Hooley” act as a fundraiser for the Valley Community Association’s initiatives and services including affordable child care, neighborhood beautification projects, and community events.
Whether you are Irish or not you’re invited to one of the largest celebrations of Irish Heritage in the country. Buffalo’s 2019 St. Patrick’s Day Parade runs through the heart of downtown Buffalo. Become part of the sea of green and find a spot along Delaware Ave to watch as bands, Irish Dancers, community organizations and others march by. It’s a long parade so take advantage of a spot near one of the many bars and restaurants on the route.
For those looking to turn their parade day into an opportunity to give back, join our sibling property the Mansion on Delaware for EPIC’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. Every Person Influences Children works to help families, schools, and communities raise children to become responsible and successful adults. Located directly on the parade route, the Mansion on Delaware offers EPIC attendees a private place to view the celebration. Festivities include cocktails & afternoon reception, hors d’oeuvres, live entertainment from Clann Na, Cara Irish Dance, and warm, fireside views of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Tickets available here.
