Hello Henry!

“Spirit of Community” Arrives at Hotel Henry’s Doorstep

Hotel Henry’s North Entrance has welcomed a new piece of art as part of the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation Sculptural Art Initiative’s “Spirit of Buffalo” sculpture series!  The Buffalo Renaissance Foundation, in collaboration with Hotel Henry, the Richardson Olmsted Campus, and Lipsey Buffalo Architecture Center, are bringing “Spirit of Community” to the new north entrance of this historic rehabilitation project.

The “Spirit of Community” by Dániel Shafer features three circles of Unity, continuously looping to celebrate the three centuries of our City of Buffalo, telling a story about our past, present, and future. The soft, graceful lines contrast from the strong, commanding lines of H.H. Richardson’s design with a flowing pattern provoking contemplation by visitors and travelers. The open shape compliments the Towers Building without obstruction, welcoming visitors with an inviting embrace. “Spirit of Community” was executed in Corten weathering steel and stands 20 feet in diameter. Dániel, a native of Buffalo, works with bronze and mixed media sculpture, questioning the dominance of accepted norms and perceived societal roles in shaping people’s behavior and freedom.

Spirit of Community

Hotel Henry and the Richardson Olmsted Campus are extremely grateful to the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation (BRF) for their generous donation of the commission, fabrication, and installation of what is to become an iconic exterior public art installation.

In an effort to contribute to the City of Buffalo’s current resurgence, to enhance the community’s reputation as a cultural tourism destination and to inspire and inform our citizens and visitors of the rich traditions and potential of Buffalo, NY, the BRF has committed its resources to spearheading the placement of five (5) thematic sculptural art installations throughout the downtown area. These sculptures salute Buffalo in both traditional and contemporary art forms.  Three of these art installations have been completed to date and the fourth, focused on the “Spirit of Community,” has arrived at Hotel Henry’s doorstep.

The dedication of the “Spirit of Community” will take place at Hotel Henry on Wednesday, January 3rd, 2018 at 2 pm. Tours will be offered of Hotel Henry and attendees will get a sneak peek of the future Lipsey Buffalo Architecture Center, opening in 2018 with exhibits spotlighting masterpieces of Buffalo’s architecture. The event is open to the press and public with warm hospitality provided by 100 Acres: The Kitchens at Hotel Henry!
