Summer Jazz Series | THOMAS MARINARO QUARTET

THURSDAY, AUGUST 13TH | 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

We’re excited to present free live jazz in a National Historic setting every Friday this summer, hosted by JazzBuffalo!  Make a reservation on the 100 Acres Patio or bring a folding chair, pick a spot on the South Lawn, and order takeaway food and drink from our kitchens.

Tom has been found playing his sax in every corner of Buffalo, from the Northeast (Lewiston) Jazz Festival (with My Cousin Toné and Mark Marinaccio and Friends) to Pausa Art House and everywhere in between. Tom has had the opportunity to back the legendary O’Jays, but his most notable work has been with, Mark Marinaccio and Friends, and the Thomas Marinaro Quartet.  The Thomas Marinaro Quartet features some of the area’s most talented musicians: Mark Marinaccio – Piano, Paul Yates- Bass, Tim Webb- Drums, and Thomas Marinaro-Sax

PARKING: Parking is available on the north side of Hotel Henry. All lots of the Buffalo Psychiatric Center – including undeveloped lots on the east side of the building – are not available for parking and violators will be ticketed.

RESTROOMS: For those enjoying the public South Lawn, with or without take-away from 100 Acres, Hotel Henry’s restrooms will not be available. Summer Jazz Series | THE PAPER ROSES

FRIDAY, AUGUST 14TH | 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

We’re excited to present free live jazz in a National Historic setting every Thursday and Friday this summer, hosted by JazzBuffalo!  Make a reservation on the 100 Acres Patio or bring a folding chair, pick a spot on the South Lawn, and order takeaway food and drink from our kitchens.

The Paper Roses are a hot-jazz and Django Reinhardt style inspired group based out of Western NY. Playing original songs and interpreting classic guitar swing sounds in a contemporary way. The group features Sean McNamara on lead guitar, Tyler Westcott on rhythm guitar and vocals, Patrick Jackson on bass, and Brendan Gosson on violin.  You can expect the Paper Roses to play an eclectic mix of standards from the Hot Club repertoire, inspired originals, blazing instrumentals, and a few curveballs to top it all off! The Paper Roses deliver a highly danceable, and contagiously entertaining show that will move audiences of all ages!

Will Holton is a Buffalo-bred saxophonist who draws inspiration from Jazz, R&B, and Soul artists. An ambassador for the countries largest Juneteenth Festival, he has also performed at statewide music festivals including Buffalo’s Pine Grill Reunion, Rochester’s Roc the Park and Afrikan American Festivals, Syracuse’s CNY Jazz Festival and annual performance in White Plains, NY, and Washington DC.  Will Holton will be joined by three stellar jazz, smooth jazz, and R&B musicians – Cal Parmer on bass, Brandon Josey on keyboards/vocals, and Tony Payne, Jr. on drums.

The Jay/Sharp-tet enjoys performing a collection of original compositions and arrangements of jazz standards around the Western New York area. Past performances include the Queen City Jazz Festival, the Northwest Jazz Festival, the Nietzsche’s Jazz Festival, Babeville’s 9th Ward, and at Pausa Art House. Inspired by ensembles such as the great Miles Davis Quintets they strive to approach every tune with a unique interpretation.

Hotel Henry is excited to announce Summer Thursdays, a summer urban market & neighborhood block party experience! Explore an urban market within a rotating block party featuring a variety of summer experiences for the community that will include a curated collection of local vendors, music, art, games, garden-inspired food & cocktails, and more. We are inviting our guests to explore the work of local makers, growers, and artisans while sipping Henry’s signature summer cocktails, enjoying seasonal fare, and grooving to live music.

The Hotel Henry Summer Thursdays Market is free and open to the public and will take place from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, May 28th, Thursday, June 25th, Thursday, July 23rd, Thursday, August 27th.

Charlie Ballantine is an internationally renowned, award-winning guitarist. He has been a featured artist at notable events such as The Winnipeg International Jazz Festival, The Indianapolis Jazz Festival, The Bloomington Jazz Festival, and The Elkhart Jazz Festival. Charlie is also a frequent performer at renowned jazz clubs such as The Jazz Kitchen (Indianapolis), Andy’s Jazz Club (Chicago), Cliff Bell’s (Detroit), and The Chatterbox (Indianapolis). His music stems from the traditions of folk, jazz, and blues music with influences such as Bill Frisell, John Scofield, Wes Montgomery, and Jimi Hendrix.For this special engagement, Charlie Ballantine will be joined by the world-renowned jazz saxophonist, Rob Dixon. The music of Rob Dixon is both respectful of tradition and free with expression and truly shows the musical diversity that is within Rob’s creativity.

Saturday, August 29th marks the 100th birth date anniversary of one of the most significant trailblazers in the history of jazz. The centennial of Charlie Parker offers a unique opportunity to pay tribute to the lasting legacy of his significant influence on the art form we call jazz. The alto saxophonist brief time on earth left an indelible mark on how jazz is performed that continues today. Nicknamed “Bird,” he ushered in the bebop sound and era of jazz. The famed poet Jack Kerouac called him “as important as Beethoven.” Four of his recordings were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame including albums Charlie Parker With Strings and Jazz At Massey Hall and the songs “Ornithology” and “Billie’s Bounce.”

DeeAnn DiMeo is one of the most sought-after singers in the area. Her recent release in 2019 of “Stay Here” is a powerful collection of personal originals that follow her works of “Songs From The Heart” and “Desperately Seeking DeeAnn.” DeeAnn will be accompanied by three outstanding touring jazz artists: Cal Parmer on bass, Rod Bonner on the keyboard, and Daniel Powell on drums. All three are fixtures in the smooth jazz world touring with the likes of Najee.

“Led by composer and multi-instrumentalist Paul Hage, Mirage gives contemporary jazz a global perspective by combining unique instrumentation with the rhythms and melodies from the three continents that border the Mediterranean Sea. Genres such as nuevo-flamenco, acid, and smooth jazz are met with classical-style guitar playing from Hage and band-mate Dan Innes, creating an expressive fusion of world music that has become the band’s trademark. Percussionist and Moroccan-born Hicham plays bongos, Djembe, and Derbuki among other instruments. With the level of musicianship and cultural awareness that Mirage displays, it’s a language everyone can understand.” – Jon Wheelock

Summer Jazz Series | JAZZ OF MARY RAMSEY

Critically acclaimed singer, songwriter, violin/violist Mary Ramsey of the 10,000 Maniacs appears for a performance that will explore jazz standards, gypsy jazz, the classical music repertoire as well as Mary Ramsey’s original compositions.  The indie-rock world may know her as the vocalist for the post-Natalie incarnation of 10,000 Maniacs, but the violist, violinist, and songwriter has had a long and distinguished career aside from that group playing jazz, classical, and folk music.
